When one of these lights comes on, it means that one of the sensors or computerized components that monitor your vehicle’s engine system is indicating something. Though nothing may seem wrong with the car, we suggest that you bring the car in foroil change intervals will vary. It used to be normal to change the oil every 5000 Kn, but with modern lubricants most engines today have recommended oil change intervals of 5,000 to 14,500 KM
Drivers with less typical driving habits should change engine oil every 5,000 KM or six months for vehicles 2008 and newer, and every 5000 KM or three months for cars 2007 and older. According to Ford, less typical driving habits include frequent off-road driving or driving in dusty conditions, towing or carrying heavy loads, excessive idling or driving at low speeds for long distances.
However, some mechanics we spoke to say replacing oil more frequently allows them to inspect your car for other issues or routine maintenance, such as replacing the timing belt or brakes
Most late-model cars require synthetic-blend or full-synthetic, low-viscosity, multi-grade, resource-conserving oils that minimize friction and maximize fuel economy. However, choosing the right oil is not always easy. The proper oil for your make and model of vehicle must have the correct SAE viscosity grade, meet performance standards set by the API, ILSAC and/or ACEA, and comply with any unique specifications established by the automaker or engine manufacturer. These requirements are detailed in your vehicle owner’s manual, and your auto repair shop can provide information on your vehicle’s recommended oil specifications as well.
If you aren’t making long trips at high, steady speeds (like you would on a highway) then your engine isn’t getting hot enough to boil off condensation that accumulates in the system. That can cause oil to break down faster.
If your car has an oil life monitoring system, note that this light is different than your oil pressure light, which illuminates on your dash if your car’s oil isn’t flowing properly due to low level, a failing oil pump, a leak in the system or some other issue. Learn the difference between the two dash lights, because if the oil pressure light comes on, you need to stop driving as soon as possible to avoid engine damage.
